Osteoporosis is the loss of calcium in the bones. It effects many people all over the world as they move into old age. There are many theories as to the best way reducing the risk of this condition. The dairy marketing industry would have you believe that drinking more cows milk is the best option. However it is the contention of this article there is a better way.

The number one way of reducing the risk of developing this condition is to reduce your protein intake.

How is this achieved? By dropping meat from your diet and even better dropping cows milk too. In the US some 3% of vegetarians suffered bone loss compared to 18% of meat eaters. With females the rates are higher. Meat as we know is high in protein and to compensate for the high acidic content of meat the body draws calcium out of the bone to make alkaline salts in the blood.

Research has shown a diet high in protein results in negative calcium balance. Fish is considered a better option to red meat but even here the higher concentration of phosphorus also draws calcium out of the bone. So we can see that if a high intake of calcium say from cows milk is also supplemented by a high meat intake then the effects of the milk are nullified.

Also an excess intake of calcium can reduce the body's production of Vitamin D which is needed for bone development.Silicon is also needed in bone development and is found in mother's milk, brown rice and leafy greens. Another reason to increase your intake of vegetables.

Magnesium is also needed for bone development and is found in leafy greens, alfalfa sprouts, figs, dates, garlic and kelp. Boron is a little know mineral which is important in the production of Vitamin D and is found in kelp alfalfa and other sprouting seeds.

So we can say a low protein vegetable based diet is essential in preventing calcium loss in bones. This should be supported by exercise such as walking or push ups. Yoga is also an excellent way of increasing upper body strength.

So please don't be taken in by those seductive ads in TV about how wonderful milk is because all the celebs endorse it. What you need to focus on is reducing your protein intake as this will do the most to prevent calcium loss from your bones.

Move towards a meat and dairy free diet and increase your intake of leafy greens and live sprouting foods.Your bones will thank your for it.
